Research

The science of biology is in the midst of a revolution. Application of the methods and concepts of mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, and information science are providing deep insight into classical biological problems such as the nature of heredity, the control of protein function, the regulation of gene expression in cells, the regulation of cellular activity, the mechanisms of growth and development, and the nature and interactions of nerve activity, brain function, and behavior. In addition, this confluence is nurturing new disciplines such as synthetic biology and systems biology.

To capitalize on its eminent position in the biological and physical sciences and to strengthen cross-disciplinary research, Caltech recently reorganized its life science research to form a new Division of Biology and Biological Engineering (BBE). The wide range of life-science research being carried out in BBE laboratories is further enhanced by faculty with related interests in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the Division Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Geology. Together, BBE and its affiliated laboratories provide outstanding opportunities to carry out cutting-edge work in fundamental, translational, and applied research across a broad spectrum of life sciences.
