Graduate students in our division pursue research in many areas of modern biology and biological engineering. Instruction and training towards the PhD degree are organized by three different graduate programs (also called "options" at Caltech):

The program in Biology is based on approaches derived from biochemistry, biophysics, and genetics that offer new possibilities for expanded insight into long-standing problems.

The program in Neurobiology organizes study of the nervous system, from events at the molecular and cellular level, through the function of circuits, to phenomena of animal and human behavior, including the computational modeling of neural processes. 

The graduate program in Bioengineering focuses on the application of engineering principles to the design, analysis, construction, and manipulation of biological systems, and on the discovery and application of new engineering principles inspired by the properties of biological systems.

The concentrations in Microbiology and Systems Biology also serve to organize a curricular focus and research community in those fields.

Biochemical approaches play an important role in many of these fields, and there is extensive interaction with related graduate programs in biochemistry within the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, notably the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics option. At the interface to engineering and computer science our faculty and students have lively contacts with the graduate program in Computation and Neural Systems.
