Postdoctoral Position (Taboada Lab)

A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Carlos Taboada in the Division of Biology and Biological Engineering at the California Institute of Technology.

Research in the Taboada Lab focuses on the biochemical, physiological, and physical foundations of animal coloration. We are particularly interested in how lymphatic proteins contribute to the development of diverse optical traits in amphibians. While our work has centered on members of the serpin superfamily, we are also discovering a variety of novel amphibian-derived proteins with intriguing optical and chemical properties.

A core component of our research applies evolutionary biochemistry to understand how sequence variation across the amphibian tree of life has shaped the biophysical properties of proteins involved in phenomena such as camouflage, transparency, and fluorescence.

The successful candidate will contribute to the discovery, purification, and identification of novel proteins, and will use molecular biology, biochemistry, and biophysical approaches to characterize their functional properties. Prior experience in molecular biology, protein purification, and protein biophysics is required. Additional expertise in mass spectrometry, de novo protein sequencing, or posttranslational modifications is highly desirable.

The following publications highlight the evolutionary history and functional roles of several proteins that will be central to this project:

Candidates

We are seeking highly motivated and talented individuals with a Ph.D. in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, or a related field, and a strong background in protein biophysics. To apply, please submit a CV, a brief statement of research interests, and the names and contact information of three references to [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. The position is funded for two years and potentially longer depending on progress.
